Weekend Workout

I'm keeping my promise to my vet ... keep moving and maintain a good Senior Dog weight. LOVE the weekends. Weather permitting ...

I get to go to one of my favorite parks and workout with mom.

Many of you know how my mom enjoys "stair climbing".

So here I am joining her for some stair exercises.

These steps are located in our town's lakefront park.

It is adjacent to a circular grassy field.

These steps are actually use as "seats".

During summer months musical events are held on the grassy field and the audience are seated on these steps.

We've already shared on our previous posts some information about stair climbing and its benefits. Just to confirm ...
Stair climbing is truly a great cardiovascular and weight loss exercise. I've lost a good amount of weight climbing stairs ~2-3x a week. My mom does not need to loose weight but stair climbing does help her maintain a toner lower body....ME TOO!

Comfort With A Bamboo Charcoal Insert

As a Senior Dog I love to just chill ...

basically I enjoy resting and taking long naps.

Comfort is very important.

Love the couch(es) (that i am not allowed to lay on).

If the couch is not available I often stay on my comfy bed.

My bed got more comfy ...

Silver Tail provided me a mat for Senior Dog. It’s a multi-purpose mat that you can take anywhere. It has a non-skid bottom so it is perfect when my mom places it on the wood floor (next to my bed).

What’s so cool about it?

It has a removable Bamboo Charcoal Insert. Honestly, we are not familiar with this kind of insert which for us makes this an intriguing product.

Why Bamboo Charcoal? According to Silver Tail packaging ... “Bamboo Charcoal is made from Moso Bamboo, also known as “Black Diamond”. Interesting! Does anyone know about this?

Well,I received this mat mid October and it took me about 2 weeks to lay on it. WHY? My mom thinks because of the weather. It was hot and when the weather changed I started to lay on it especially after our morning walk. Currently, this mat is permanently on my bed. Mom says that I sleep well (been snoring more often) and have been sleeping a lot on my back. Since I do not have any joint pains or discomfort,

I am not sure if it has helped. My mom does like the idea of the removable bamboo insert. She is thinking to make me a pillow wherein there will be a slot for the insert.

On the packaging it says that the bamboo charcoal insert is washable (by hand) and recharges in the sun. We are just unsure when is the right time to wash the charcoal insert. We wish the packaging has a clearer and more detailed instructions. Also, the waterproof lining material captures ... lots, lots, lots, of my fur.

My mom finds using a lint brush the best way to clean it up.

Teach Me: Holiday Stocking

Holiday stockings are traditions to many households.

If you have a pet for sure you have a holiday stocking for him or her.

3 basic materials you need to make a
Holiday Stocking

1) sock patterns

2) 4 pieces of fabric

(2 for the outside, 2 for the inside or lining)

3) small piece of fabric for the hanger

My mom used scrap fabrics for the front fabric.

She basically sewed small pieces of fabric together (peppermint candy and multicolored bone fabrics)

To have the same sizes make sure to cut together the fabrics.

Gather the 4 fabrics.
Place the right side together and sew the edges (sides & bottom).
For the lining leave a 2”opening on one side (do not sew it)

Make tiny clips. Make sure to not cut the stitches.

This makes it easier when you pull the fabric inside out.

Turn the outside fabric inside out. Place it inside the lining.

Match the top edges. Place the holder inside. Sew around.

FUN part ...

Pull the outside fabric from the lining 2” opening.

Sew and close the 2"opening.

Then put the inside lining through the outside fabric. Once again match the edges and sew around the top.

Women Helping Women

Many women are unleashing their potentials and becoming a part of a very competitive world we live in. It is wonderful to see that there are establishments and groups that support women’s work.

As many of you know, I inspired my mom to write a children’s book about one of my backyard adventures with my chipmunk friend.

Last October 23, 2011, she self-published Sugar’s Furry Friend.

It is very exciting as my mom fulfilled one of her dreams to be an author. My mom is learning a lot about self-publishing. Since mom does not have a publisher and distributor agent, she has to do most of the work particularly in promoting Sugar’s Furry Friend. This weekend we visited a local independent bookstore, Women & Children First.

Here I am outside and looking at my mom inside the bookstore.

I was a bit disappointed that I could not go inside with her.

Women & Children First is located in a North Side Chicago neighborhood named Andersonville. It is own by two women. There mission is to “promote the work of women writers and to create a place in which all women would find books reflecting their lives and interests.”
Such a terrific mission particularly for women writers. Women & Children First is one of the largest feminist bookstores in the country stocking more than 30,000 books by and about women.

I am Golden Happy that mom’s book, Sugar’s Furry Friend is available to purchase at Women & Children First bookstore.

Tasty Tuesday Teach Me Animal Prints Fabric Coasters

It’s that time of the year ...

family and friends holiday gatherings at your home.

Of course you’ll be serving drinks to your guests.

They will be carrying their glasses and placing them on your counters and tables. Don’t you dislike to see a ring marks/stains on your counters and/or tables? Also, it can be challenging to clean and remove it.

Fabric coasters are great inexpensive way to eliminate this problem.

My mom used scrap animal prints fabric and a seasonal fabric.

It is very easy to do, just 5 steps.

1) Sew together the animal prints scrap fabric.

2) Cut a 5"x5" using a pinking shears scissors (zigzag edges).

3) Cut another 5”x”5 with the seasonal fabric.

4) Cut a 4.5”x 4.5” batting.

5) Sew the 3 pieces together around the edges.

Since the fabric coasters have pinked edges it is less likely to ravel.

By using fabric coasters, there will be no rings or stains on your counters and/or tables. Also a great way to add color and pizazzzzz ...

Got Goat’s Milk Soap?

We did!

We received all natural Goat’s Milk Soap from Wrought Iron Soap.

Actually it’s our winning prize from Guide Dog Awareness.

Pet insurance is quickly becoming a must-have
for growing numbers of pet owners. 

What Does Pet Insurance Cover? 

While the exact details of each policy vary based on your particular circumstances, there are some common restrictions. Most policies will not cover routine veterinary care such as spays, neuters, vaccinations and check-ups. Certain conditions may not be covered by an insurance policy, especially if they are known to be common to a specific breed - breed-specific restrictions are common in dog insurance policies. Additionally, if your policy lapses or you take out a policy on an older animal, your pet may not be covered for pre-existing conditions. Most policies will have a standard deductible, or fee that you pay out of pocket before your coverage kicks in. Is It Expensive? 

The cost of a pet insurance policy depends on various factors including the species, breed, age and pre-existing conditions of the pet. You can often make additional savings by taking out policies with your insurance provider on more than one pet. Policy costs will also vary based on the level of cover and the provider that you choose. However, excellent policies can be obtained for a monthly charge that is less than the price of a single take-out coffee - compare that to the many thousands that you could expect to pay for a serious accident or chronic disease.

Overall, pet insurance can provide you peace of mind.

It allows you to make decisions based on what is best for the health of your pet, rather than having to factor in the very real financial worries that can often force owners to choose an option that they find less desirable.

Here I am on my last vet visit.

Yes, my mom thought of having a pet insurance when I was young.

At that time she found it still expensive and decided to just save up for my vet care expenses. Until I developed allergies and my vet bills skyrocketed. But it was too late to get a pet insurance.

She learned that ideally if you want a good pet insurance plan for you pet, get it while your pet is young and healthy.

Now that I am old, a Senior Dog, vet bills is once again getting costly due to additional/unexpected tests.

My mom always wondered if I had a pet insurance

Some Words on Wednesday Graupel SNOW

We had very strange weather last week, particularly Thursday.

It was cold and windy.

During the mid-afternoon, it was sunny then cloudy then snowy.

Mom said it’s a good time to take my holiday photos.

I was not very cooperative because I rather play

and the SNOW was a bit distracting ...

... Can you see the SNOW?

It’s called Graupel Snow which are loose collection of frozen water droplets, sometimes called “soft hail.”

Tasty Tuesday Teach Me Decorative Pot Holders

Pot holders are a must in every kitchen.

Pot holders are used to hold hot kitchen cooking equipment.

We got several pot holders but most of them are just for decorations.

Just like this ...

Mom made this using left over fabric. A dog and cat was sewn on a plain cloth. Inside she used a heat resistant batting. (You may use a regular batting especially if it is a decorative pot holder.)

Here are the steps on how my mom made it ...

Cut two 6x6 fabric for the back.
Optional!

create a backing for the dog/cat by sewing strip of fabrics on each 4 sides which what my mom did.

Also, cut 5x2 fabric for the holder. You have to fold both ends to the middle then fold it again.

You’ll have a 5x1/2 strip.

Make 2 strips.

FUN Part!

Lay front and back fabric with nice side together, place the holder in between and batting on top of the back fabric. Sew around the 3 layers but leave a 2” opening on one side.

Take the inner fabric and pull it out. Sew around the 3 layers and close the 2” opening.

Being a Senior Dog: Need For Glucosamine

As a Senior Dog, it was recommended that supplements need to be added on my diet.

One of these supplements is called Glucosamine.

My mom has been doing lots of research about Glucosamine when we won some I Love Dogs Glucosamine & Chrondrotin with Green Tea sponsored by All Things Dog Blog. We won this prize way back in May and started with it last June. I was very lucky that I LOVE Dogs provided me 90 pills = 3 months of supply.

After I consumed all the chewable pills, we still have some unanswered questions.

We consulted again my Vet. Also, we are so fortunate that

Dr. Mark of Ask The Vet from All Things Dog Blog, provided us some answers too. Here’s his response ...

Not all glucosamine supplements are created equal. The main problem on the nutraceutical side of the house is there is no regulating body, like the FDA, to make sure that the product does what it says it does. This makes sticking with a reputable brand VERY important. This is the most important thing to consider when purchasing a glucosamine supplement. The only glucosamine supplement for dogs that has been evaluated in a clinical study is Dasuquin with MSM. In my book, it is the best. Other name brands that I have had good results with are Phycox and Glyco Flex III. These are the only 3 that I would ever recommend. You absolutely get what you pay for. Getting the giant bottle at Costco for 5 dollars is literally a waste of money and will not help your dog at all. The 3 supplements I mentioned all have MSM. I would not use one without it. MSM is a natural anti-inflammatory and improves the efficacy of the supplement.

I do not routinely recommend a glucosamine supplement unless there is an underlying issue that will lead to arthritis sooner in life, such as known hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, medial patellar luxation, or some other condition that causes instability in a joint. In this situation, the sooner they start getting the supplement, the better. Any kind of joint instability will lead to arthritis much sooner than it would normally happen.

Giving the supplement once or twice a day does not matter. When I have a dog that needs it, I give it once a day.

Any individual of any breed can have joint problems. Large breeds tend to be over represented with hip dysplasia, yet small dogs have hip problems as well, we just call it something different. So, I take each case and evaluate on a case-by-case basis. I do not routinely put German Shepherds on these supplements just because they are the poster children for hip dysplasia. It needs to be diagnosed, or at least be suspect because of limping, first.

On a final note, there are MANY options for managing arthritis in dogs, a glucosamine supplement is only one. Non-steroidal anti-inflamatories, steroids, pain medications, Omega-3 fatty acids, Hill’s J/D diet, Adequan, and acupuncture are other very helpful options.

Awareness Month(s): Sharing My VET Visits

October was Awareness and Pet Wellness month.

Every month should be Awareness and Pet Wellness month.

A life of a pet is ever changing. Continually being aware and educated about your pet's behavior and health is very important.

October was the month I went for my annual vet examination.

As I age, my annual visit seems to take longer especially

when tests are needed which also requires multiple visits and several one on one (phone calls) conversations with the vet.

My multiple lumps on my left/right lateral chest, ventral chest and pectoral area were my mom's biggest concern. Test were done and simply lipomas. My family continues to monitor these lumps as every year it gets bigger.

This year's vet visit, 2 health issues where brought

to my mom's attention.

First, my weight ... I'm FAT.

For a Senior Dog it is not safe to carry extra weight.

My vet asked me to be on a diet.

What does it mean? ... less tasty food and treats.

I tried to convince my mom that my weight gain was due to the fullness of my Golden Fur. She did not buy it ...

so I've been eating less and moving more.

It's been four weeks and Guess What? I've lost Golden Amazing 5 lbs!

My heavy panting has been an issue too so

continually maintaining a good weight is a MUST.

Secondly, the vet took several photos (x-rays) of my body.

The vet informed my mom that my liver is a bit enlarged.

Several test were done and results were good.

My mom is a bit uncertain on what do. Vet suggested to do more tests.

She is hesitant as I don't exhibit any symptoms that are alarming.

What entails taking more test? Will it help or provide us a solution?

My mom does not want to regret and make a wrong decision. Lately, she's been doing lots of reading and research. She's observing me on a daily basis and will be in contact with the vet in about 2 months.

I've advised my mom not to over think and not to worry. Any information or advise you may have will be greatly appreciated.

Seeing Beauty in {This Golden Moment} is a once a month Friday post,

I am 10 years old and I am a Senior Dog.

November is National Adopt a Senior Pet Month.

Many shelters and rescue groups have Senior Dogs.

Senior Dogs lose their homes for many different reasons.

Currently the main reason is economic hardship.

Many families can’t take care and have to give up their Senior Dog.

It’s harder for a Senior Dog to get adopted because of their age.

What exactly is a Senior Dog?

Dogs that are 7/8 years old and up.

At one of our dog events a family of 4 took photos and petted me.

The little boy said to his father, “Dad, she is an old dog.”

The father responded, “Yes, a sweet likable old dog.”

Absolutely, a Senior Dog is likable.

A Senior Dog possess unique physical and inner Beauty.

4 Beautiful Reasons To Adopt a Senior Dog

A Senior Dog is GOOD in Giving LOVE. Forever grateful in having a second home for living whatever time is left.

Great Companion. Have a mellow personality and does not demand much. Enjoys living just hanging out.

Have been socialized so will settle easily.

Most senior dog are house trained (some senior dog may temporarily forget due to confusion being in a shelter/rescue.)

Adopting/fostering a Senior Dog is a future plan of my mom.

When adopting a Senior Dog, our bloggie friend Kim of Life at the Golden Pines comes to mind. Kim has adopted/fostered many many many Senior Goldens. Kim has such Golden Goodness in her heart by providing these Senior Goldens a precious remaining life of happiness.

Age should not matter when adopting a dog,

COMPASSION and Importance for LIFE are what counts.

Teach Me Thursday: Duct Tape Dog Collar

I LOVE to tag along with my mom and go for a car ride.

There are times I invite myself ... my mom could not say no.

Ooops! many times when we arrive at our destination I have no collar.

The Duct Tape Event Festival (sponsored by Road Dog Tales and Frankie) is a pawsome opportunity for us to make an emergency dog collar.

Materials you need ...

I have a large neck so mom used two 32" duct tape.

She attached it together (sticky side together).

Use a standard ruler, to make the width 1" ... basically just fold it.

Cut another 32" duct tape. Attached it and close off the folded edge. For security purposes, cut another 32" duct tape and attach it. Simple insert into the slider and buckle. Use small pieces of duct tape to secure in place. Use a paw stamp to decorate the Duct Tape Dog Collar.

Tasty Tuesday: Roasted Butternut Squash Chips

In the kitchen ... checking what’s for dinner.

I am on a diet, lately no tasty treats for me.

How can you resist this Golden Face?

Woof! Woof!

Mom saved some butternut squash for me.

Butternut Squash is a winter squash, loaded with vitamins and fiber. It is great for baking.

Yes I am on a diet ...

so mom is making me a very simple healthy treat, Roasted Butternut Squash Chips.

Mom used the Apple Peeler and Corer to cut the Butternut Squash.

Simply Place the Butternut Squash rings on a non stick baking mat and roast it in a 300 degree for ~20-30 min (depending on the thickness).

We set our oven to convection bake.

Just a note ... when roasted it shrinks in size.

Mmmm Tasty!

Where's My Furry FRIEND?

Fall season is in full swing.

For the past days, I have not seen my Furry Friend.

Most likely My Furry Friend is busy collecting food for his winter sleep.

I wish him the very best and he gathered many tasty delish food.

It's been 2 weeks since my mom published and announced her book, Sugar's Furry Friend.

Many Golden Thanks to our bloggie friends/subscribers and family friends who purchased the book.

Also, Lots of Golden Thanks for the wonderful feedback.

Greatly appreciate your support and kind words especially my mom not having a book agent or publisher.

Self-publishing a book can be challenging but my mom says I made it very inspirational. Sugar's Furry Friend is based on one of my backyard adventures and to honor my 10years of Golden Life with my mom.

My mom also created this new website, appropriately named

If you have young children/niece/nephew/grandchildren/friends with preschool kids, Sugar's Furry Friend is a fun educational easy to read book. As a former preschool teacher, my mom gave a lot of thought on the format and writing this book. She wanted to be both beneficial for the person (such as teacher/parent/grandparent) reading the book to young children and to those young children who are able to read the book. This is one of the reasons why she added educational supplementary pages in the book.

Pure GOLD Book

We are very honored to be part of Holli Pfau’s Blog Book Tour,
Pure Gold.

Pure Gold is an inspiring story to read. A Must Read Book! especially for those who rescues dogs and/or considering rescuing a dog.

Pure Gold is a collection of stories describing Holli’s life adventures with 6 Rescued Golden Retrievers,

Nikki, Bodie, Sophie, Tucker, Daisy and Chatter

Nikki, Holli’s first Golden and became her therapy partner as they visit patients in the hospital. Nikki was the inspiration for Holli to co-found a nationally recognized hospital program of animal-assisted therapy.

“...what Nikki lacks in size, she makes up for in heart.”

Bodie was returned from the breeder due to for being imperfect (due to his eye). His original name was just Bo but Holli found it insufficient and less fitting so she renamed him Bodie. Bodie along with Nikki were great companions of Holli and her husband Walter on their hikes. Just like Nikki, Bodie also pursued a job in therapy. Bodie became a good therapy dog and a big hit in the pediatrics department.

Tucker came along after Bodie passed away. Tucker’s owner relinquished him to the shelter due to overwhelming household. Tucker’s original name is Murray. Again, Holli felt that the name Murray does not suit him. Tucker had hip problems but recovered quickly and participated in hiking trails.

While Nikki was in her prime age, Sophie came to Holli’s life and became Tucker’s faithful companion.

Reading Daisy’s story reminded my mom of me especially my agility years. My mom also did talk to me often as Holli shared some of her conversation with Daisy. Reading the story of Daisy made it clear why she made the cover of the book. Oh My Furry Friend was mentioned on page140. We love Holli’s choice of song for Daisy, “It’s Not Where You Start. it’s Where You Finish.” We do agree on “ ...its about having fun.”

Chatter struggled during her little life. Luckily she found her forever home with Holli and Daisy. Holli and his husband Walter dealt and understoodd Chatter puppy(ness). Lots of Golden Laughs on Chatter. Like Daisy, Chatter also did agility.

It did not take a long time for my mom to read Pure Gold. She read it in a plane ride. She sure had lots of notes while she was reading this book, lots of folded pages and underlined words/sentences. She cried and smiled while reading this book. She felt fine showing her emotions since the person next to her was reading The Art of Racing in the Rain.

All in all, Pure Gold by Holli Pfau is heartwarming to read.

I give 4 Golden PAWS and highly recommend it.

Some of them sadly has passed away ... but Kim of course continues to rescue. Very appreciative of all the Golden Good Deeds that Kim brings to these Senior Goldens that we decide to give her our extra copy of Pure Gold. Kim totally deserves it.

Mini Tour of the Chicago Botanic Garden: Esplanade (2011 Spooky Pooch Parade)

Once a year, the Chicago Botanic Garden invites dogs and their humans to explore the garden and partake in a fun event, Spooky Pooch.

It used to be held on December.

Three years ago they appropriately changed it to October.

Can you guess how I participated this year?

Well, I am Golden Happy to be back at the

Chicago Botanic Garden as a vendor.

The Chicago Botanic Garden is located at Glencoe, IL.

It is huge ... 24 spectacular gardens on 385 acres.

I would like to give you a mini tour of the

Garden particularly where the event was held.

The Spooky Pooch Parade was held at the Esplanade.

The Esplanade is one of the Garden’s most public spaces.

Behind me are rows of waterspouts emerging from pools of water.

Can you see? the water is pumpkin color. How cool it that!

On the Esplanade, the best place to hang out is

on lake walk path and water terrace.

This huge fountain is the main feature of the water terrace.

WOW! Can you see? A Rainbow!!!

Large pots of mums surrounds the area.

Simply Gorgeous.

Behind our booth is this 7th foot tall sculpture by Albin Polasek.

It is called “The Sower”, a classic male figure. Many visitors of the garden were captivated because of its height, strong gaze and form. What do you think?

This scuplture was a gift from the Art Institute of Chicago, ... “dedicated to spreading the seeds of learning about plants and the natural world...”

I did my Golden Inspections of the area before the event started.

The organizer of the Spooky Pooch Parade did a wonderful job.

I watched and rested on my chair. I got lots of petting.

Yes, many photographed me on my chair and extremely amused.

No I did not win ... but my mom said I WON ...

many visitor's heart, I made them smile.

The Chicago Botanic Garden’s mission is to promote enjoyment ...

I sure had Lots of Golden Enjoyment.

Tasty Tuesday: Balancing Dog Treats

Last year, I did a 10 sec Trick for a Treat.

on who inspired us and ways to accomplish this trick.

Another year ... so a new Trick for more Tasty Treats.

Yes, I balanced 4 treats, Pumpkin Bones,

and managed to hold it for 10 seconds.

I was concentrating very well.

Mom moved the 4 Pumpkin Bones between my eyes.

It sure looks tasty ... still concentrating.

Again, I managed to hold it for 10 seconds.

I am Golden Happy to do this trick.

I accomplished to balance an additional treat,
a total of 5 Pumpkin Bones on my forehead and
managed to hold it for 10 seconds + a Golden SMILE!

How many takes did it take to produce these photos? Just 15 photos.

How long long? 8 minutes

Performing a trick with your dog must be short and

most importantly it must be for FUN.

I suggest you give it a try.

The best part of the trick was I get to eat all the treats, Pumpkin Bones

(available at Sugar's Paw House).

Hanging Out at the Cheese Castle

YES, I am a lucky Golden dog to be here, a Cheese Castle.

I am enamored by this place.

I can’t help not to look around and smell the aroma ... cheesy goodness.

This place is called the Mars Cheese Castle, a family owned business.

It is nicknamed after their grandparents Mario and Martha.

Mars Cheese Castle is an interstate 94 landmark for decades, located in Kenosha Wisconsin. Recently, Mars went through a 2011 big modern renovation which resulted in this castle.

Through the renovation they decided to keep the original sign.

It’s nostalgic.

This 24,000square foot facility is heavy guarded by armored knights.

Mmmm It means that NO DOGS are allowed inside.

I have to wait outside while my mom get some cheese.

Inside there’s a big mouse with a cheese on his head.

Waited for a long time for my mom to come out.

Due to overwhelming selection of cheese, she can’t decide what to get.

Since I am on a diet, she finally decided just to get me

a “small cube” of cheddar cheese.

Mmmmm a "small cube" of cheddar cheese.

I want more cheese ...

Book Interview: The Healing Art of Pet Parenthood

Last march 25th, 2009, we shared a Must Read book The Healing Art of Pet Parenthood, a true story about the human-animal bond, healing canine cancer naturally, and an empowering new take on the grieving process when a beloved animal passes away.

In one of our weekend show, I met the author Nadine M. Rosin,
who is also a certified holistic pet consultant/bereavement and speaker.

We had a chance to ask her about her book,
The Healing Art of Pet Parenthood.

1. What inspired you to write this book.

I felt totally obligated to write this book: having gone through hearing the vet tell me my beloved dog would be dead in 6 weeks without chemo, radiation, and amputation, and then INSTEAD implementing only a holistic regimen of “clear/cleanse/build” so my girl’s body could naturally and successfully heal itself from cancer- well, how could I NOT share that with other pet parents? The truth is, we’ve forgotten that the body is a self- healing organism whether it’s dealing with a cut or a degenerative disease like cancer. After all, cancer isn’t something we catch- it’s something we develop when the immune system is too overburdened to maintain vibrant health. My dog’s recovery (in 4 months, cancer-free and thriving for an additional 11 years to the age of 19) taught me that and I am passionate about sharing our story so others never have to hear their vet say their dog has cancer.

2) How did you come up with the title?

I have worked in the healing arts (therapeutic bodywork) for many years, so the title came to me pretty organically.

3) What was the hardest part writing the book?

Nothing about writing the book was hard, although revealing so much personal information and history left me incredibly vulnerable, which felt challenging at times. Marketing the book, well now, that’s a different story when it comes to the hardest parts! :)

4) What chapter(s) in the book that meant a lot to you?

Every chapter means a lot to me. In the 19 years we were together, Buttons and I went through many things including relationships, travels, learning experiences, etc. Like anyone’s life, each chapter naturally led to the next and was built on the one before it. It was important to me, as I told our story, to include everything I learned regarding helping the body heal from cancer, and how to best navigate through the inevitable grieving process. I wanted to make sure others would benefit from what I learned the hard way, and avoid their own pets ever developing cancer.

Where Am I?

I am at my town's Harbor, just across from the Dog Beach.

Before I got here, I went to that white building behind me.

Do you see it?

I went to the Vet and I was told that I've gained a lot of weight.

So it means longer walks.

For the past 11 days, we had sunny warm Fall weather.

I had delightful walks to the park.

Mom and I diverted from our walking route and decided to take some photos on the most popular attraction in my town.

We are 3 miles from this attraction.

Yes, it's white and huge.

It is circular in shape, has 9 sides.

The surroundings and grounds are very well manicured and maintained.

Here I am on the entrance door.

Check out the stairs and the railings.

How about the intricate design.

Since this is circular in shape, there are many sides.

Here I am on one side.

You get a closer look of the detailed design.

There was a fountain across and mom was about to take a photo of me ...

someone tapped her shoulder and said "Sorry, no dogs allowed." Oooops!!!

We lived in this town for many many years and never knew that dogs were not allowed. Well, we usually just walk around the perimeter (sidewalk) and always intimidated to go inside since we knew it is a place of spiritual service. Golden Apology, I was a good dog ... just taking photos. But one last photo ...

I am at the Bahai House of Worship, a temple.

It is located just N of Chicago, between the shores of Lake Michigan.

It was constructed in 1953. This temple is one of the 7 in the world and the only one in North America. This in particular is the largest and the oldest surviving Bahai Temple.

Make sure if you plan to visit Chicago, find some time and visit the North Shore. The Bahai House is great photo opp. You will not miss it especially if you take Sheridan Road.

Tasty Tuesday: Peak's Antlers + Giveaway

Peak Antler Company gave me 2 Deer Antlers:

1) Extra large Premium - it is dense and Ideal for dogs with powerful jaws and aggressive chewers.

2) Large Economy - it is a “Y” shaped antler. It is softer and easier for older/senior dog (like me) to get to the most tastiest part, marrow.

Of course in order to do a review I have to taste test ... both of them.

I first chewed the Extra Large Premium Deer Antler

Here I am ... it’s huge and I have to use both my front paws to hold it.

Can you see I’m smiling while I chewed this tasty antler.

I had to use both sides of my back teeth ...
... I switched often from right to left.

I'm having a hard time to get to the best part.

Mom watched and took several photos while I chewed.

After ~20 minutes ... I stopped.

I got tired ... this extra large premium antler was sure tough to chew.

How about the other one ... Large Economy Antler?

It’s a Y or fork shape ... can you see it?

C’mon I’m ready to taste test it.

Oh! it took me only few seconds and I was able to chew one side and ...

had a taste of the best part. Check it out!

Jeff the owner of Peak Antler Company was correct when he said that I will like the Economy Antler. The economy line is slightly more weathered. Jeff highly recommends the economy antlers for older dogs like me as I can get the mineral benefit much easier.

All in all, Peak Antlers are great bones to chew.

They are natural, no fillers and no preservatives.

PAW Painting

There were lots of FUN Summer activities that we missed.

For the past days, we are having a glorious Summer like Fall weather.

We decided to do an outdoor craft activity, PAW Painting.

Materials you need:

1) covering material (we recycled a clear large laundry bag).

2) tape (we used painters blue tape)

3) paper (we used a thick drawing large paper)

4) non-toxic washable paints

5) brush (we used soft cotton ropes and tied together)

It is recommended to do this Paw Project on a flat surface.

Grassy area on your backyard is not recommended.

Cover your work area and place a tape on edges and corners.

Also, tape the corners of the paper on the cover.

5 Steps: PAW Painting

1) Use the brush and apply some paint on one of your dog's paw.

2) Place your dog paw on the paper.

3) Use another brush an apply another color on one of your dog's paw.

4) Ask your dog to walk around the paper.

5) Repeat steps 2)-3)

Wash/Rinse your dog's PAW thoroughly with water.

Most importantly have lots of FUN ... but ...

I do not suggest that you sit down on the paper.

Wala!!! What do you think?

Refreshing Bath with Vet's Best + Giveaway

We are having gorgeous fall weather.

Did lots of long walks/hikes for the past days.

We encountered many small bugs/insects on our walks/hikes.

I'm not itching so I know I did not get bit.

Just for precaution I'm getting a bath using

My mom avoided not to have contact on my eyes, nose n mouth.

All in all, I had a very refreshing bath.

Tasty Tuesday: Crab Apples

I am in my front yard. We have lots of crab apples.

What an interesting name for an apple.

It sure does not look like a crab?

Our house is located in a subdivision that used to be a peach and apple orchard. We are the only one on our block that still have an apple tree.

What is a crab apple tree?

It is a dwarf size tree that bears small fruited apple.

Can you eat a crab apple?

Yes. However it is very sour/tart.

Many use crab apples to make candy, jellies and pickles.

Unfortunately, we don’t utilize these crab apples since we lived here. We were told due to the age of the tree it is only for ornamental purposes.

Well, lots of my furry friends (chipmunks and squirrels) are having a tasty time munching these crab apples.

Also, some of the kids on my block use these crab apples for a fun apple prints painting art.

We love having a crab apple tree on our front yard.

Many say having a fruit bearing tree in your front yard is said to lead to good fortune. Due to the bad weather we had for the past months, we noticed many branches fell off, lots of black and brown spots on the leaves and the crab apples are very bruised.

My family used a special fertilizer and hoping to revive it

... so will see what happens in Spring.

Towering "O"rah in the City

Gorgeous Fall Sunday weekend.

Great time to spend the day in the City of Chicago

for a Leisure Golden Walk.

First Stop:

Just got to say Golden Hello to Oprah.

Lots of changes in the vicinity of the Harpo Studios

since I was here last July'11

First, the street name was changed to

Honorary Oprah Winfrey Way

How cool it that!

(The photo on the right was taken last July'11, the first weekend when the street sign was changed.)

Second major change is the sign on the entrance ...

It's nice that Oprah retained the Harpo Studios in Chicago.

A new show, The Rosie Show, will be utilizing the Harpo Studios.

The show will debut on 10/10 (my 3rd blogversary) on Oprah's new OWN Network. Will definitely check it out.

Second Stop:

Can you guess what's the name of the building behind me?

Clue: From 1973 to 1996 was the tallest building in the world.

The Willis Tower

For many Chicagoans, it's always be known as the Sears Tower.

Name change occurred in 2009.

It was built in 1973, it stands 108 stories over Downtown Chicago.

The Willis Tower is a destination for many tourist visiting Chicago. The top attraction is the the Willis Tower Skydeck located on the 103rd floor. Oh! The view from the Skydeck is amazing.

On a clear day, you can see 40-50 miles ... the city of Chicago: beautiful architecture. You can also see the neighboring states: Michigan, Indiana and Wisconsin. The Skydeck also features interactive, museum-quality exhibits highlighting Chicago's history and historic characters.

The Skydeck also has high-tech, high-powered telescopes for a closer look at the City. The most recent addition to the Skydeck is Sky Ledge.

Oh! Here you can walk out onto a glass-floored section and look down 103 stories below your feet. Just amazing!!!

Willis Tower is definitely a MUST see attraction

if you plan to visit the city of Chicago.

Most recently the new Superman movie was shooting inside the Willis tower. The inside of Willis Tower will serve as the Daily Planet (where Superman's alter ego, reporter Clark Kent, works). For sure we will be checking out this new Superman movie.

LOVE At First BARK + Giveaway

Love at First Bark is a compassionate book

which contains 3 short stories of saving and rescuing dogs.

In the first story, Julie shared her family life struggles, living in a dangerous neighborhood in NY, having a young child, Violet, and owning “not so behaved” 3 dogs. During this time. Julie and her husband, Paul, encountered a mix pit bull which they named Morris. Meeting and saving Morris helped Julie and Paul to reconnect with one another.

The second story is about fostering a terrier dog, which they named Clementine (Clemmie). You have to read the book to find out how they derived this name. Julie prepared her home to foster Clementine by sending 2 of her dogs to Kamp Kanine (in which they needed it for a long time). Julie was able to find a home for Clemmie but due to her special medical needs she reunited with Julie’s family. It is a sweet story about fostering, something my family would like to do someday.

Mmmmm “Sugar” that’s my name ... on page 66.

The third story is about Julie’s trip (hoping to be a vacation with Paul) to New Orleans after the devastation created by Hurricane Katrina. Amazing rescue ... “I realized that I am the kind of person who would dive under a train to save a dog.”

All in all, a wonderful book to read for any dog lover, particularly who rescues and foster dogs. It shows how saving a dog can truly shape and affect ones life. It’s a short easy to read book, my mom read it in couple hours. I give Julie Klam's LOVE At First BARK book 4 Golden Paws + a Golden WINK!

Tasty Tuesday: Click For A Tasty Treat

How to Clicker Train Your Dog

Clicker training is a method of dog training. In clicker training you use a device called a clicker which is made of plastic and has a metal tab. When you press the metal tab with your thumb it makes a clicking sound.

How does clicker training work?

In clicker training your dog works for something he really wants – usually it’s a tasty treat. Each time he does the desired behavior you give him a treat. The treat is what’s called a reinforcer. By giving him a treat following a specific behavior you cause that behavior to be likely to occur again in the future.

So where does the clicker come into it?

If your dog has never been introduced to a clicker and you click it – it means nothing to him – he’ll give you a blank stare (“I heard it, so what?”). So the first step is to pair the clicking noise with a treat. To do this you click the clicker and then hand your dog a tasty treat. Again, click and hand him a treat. Do this a few times until you click and your dog looks at you as if to say, “I heard the click where is my treat.” At this point you’ve successfully paired the click with the treat. The click noise now becomes a reinforcer too. From now on, when the dog hears a click he understands it to mean “Good boy, you get a treat!” And your dog will now work for clicks because he considers them to be the same as treats. (Note: he’ll only think that a click and a treat are one and the same thing – which is what you want him to think – if you always follow every click with a treat. So be sure you always do.)

Now that you’ve paired the click and the treat together you can use the clicker to mark a specific behavior that you wish to reinforce. This is the magic of the clicker. It allows precision and clearer communication between you and your dog! It gives you a way to be precise about which behavior exactly is being reinforced. It lets you pin-point to your dog which behavior will get a treat. So, for example, to teach your dog to sit you hold the clicker in one hand, treat in the other, and wait until he sits. The moment his bum touches the ground: click and then give him a treat. Timing is very important: whatever exact behavior he is doing when you click is the behavior that is reinforced. If you click the moment his bum makes contact with the ground he will realize: bum touching ground = treat. If you click late when he has already stood up again then you are reinforcing that behavior: standing up = treat. So you must click at the moment the specific behavior you want to reinforce occurs.

That’s all there is to clicker training! Click the behavior you want to reinforce and then follow up with a treat immediately after. You just repeat this click/treat process over and over to reinforce the behavior. Pretty soon your dog will know exactly what behavior causes you to click and he will start performing that behavior whenever you have the clicker in your hand. Congratulations, you’ve taught your dog a behavior using only clicks and treats and he knows exactly what to do without you saying anything. But we haven’t finished, so let’s keep going.

There a two ways to teach your dog a behavior in clicker training:

Luring and Shaping

With luring you use a treat to lure your dog to do the behavior. For example, to lure him to sit: hold a treat close to his nose then move it over his head. He’ll tilt his head back to get the treat and lower his bum to the ground. The moment his bum makes contact with the floor: click and then give him a treat. Keep luring him into the sit position clicking each time he sits and following up with a treat.

With shaping, on the other hand, you don’t lure, you simply watch your dog patiently and click any behavior that’s a step in the right direction. For example, to “shape” your dog to go to to his bed and lay down put the bed beside him and click if he merely looks at the bed. Then click whenever he takes a step towards the bed. Then click whenever he puts a paw on the bed. Then click when he stands with all paws on the bed. Then click when he starts to drop his chest. And so on. Until the final click is for him lying down on the bed. If you use the shaping method regularly, your dog will start to think of it as a game and you’ll see that he starts to automatically offer you behaviors when you have the clicker in hand as he tries to figure out what behavior makes that magic click (and treat) happen!

Add a Command

You may have noticed that, so far, we haven’t been telling the dog what to do with a verbal command. That’s because in clicker training you wait until your dog is reliably performing the behavior, THEN you teach him a name of that behavior. After all, dogs don’t understand English so saying “Sit” before he knows what “Sit” actually means and how to do it is silly.

So wait for your dog to perform the behavior that you’ve just taught him by luring or shaping him, but this time just before he performs the behavior give the verbal command (such as “Sit”). Continue to say the command out loud each time before he performs the behavior (you don’t have to give the command in a loud voice, dogs have excellent hearing, normal speaking volume is fine). Be sure to keep clicking and treating whenever he performs the behavior correctly after you’ve given the command. Now, from this point on, only click and treat if he performs the behavior AFTER you’ve given the command.

At this point, after following all the steps above, you’ve trained your dog to perform a behavior on command. But you’re still clicking each time he performs the behavior after you’ve given the command. So this brings us to the next question…

Do you need to carry a clicker around with you all the time to get your dog to obey you? Of course not! The clicker is only a tool you use to teach a behavior. It’s only used DURING the training phase. Once your dog has mastered the behavior you can stop using the clicker. (He’s mastered the behavior if he performs the behavior correctly every time you give the command. If he hasn’t mastered it you need to keep clicker training until he has.) You should, however, continue to reinforce a behavior with a tasty treat whenever he performs the behavior on command.

Some Final Tips

You can teach your dog virtually any behavior he is physically capable of performing using a clicker and treats. First, think of the behavior you want to teach then use the luring or shaping method to teach it to him. Sometimes the luring method is easier to use and sometimes shaping is easier. It just depends on the behavior. After he’s preforming the behavior reliably teach him the name of the command for that behavior by saying it before the behavior occurs. Then only click and treat when he performs the behavior after you’ve given the command. Have multiple training sessions during the day and keep them short: 5-7 minutes per session.

Here’s a tip: A big mistake a lot of new clicker trainers make is that they don’t click and treat often enough when shaping a behavior. When shaping you need to break the behavior up into lots and lots of tiny little baby steps and click and treat each one to keep your dog heading in the right direction. If you raise the bar too high to quickly your dog will become discouraged and confused.

If your dog ever seems like he’s has forgotten a behavior that you’ve been teaching him, or even if he just becomes confused and looks lost, just go back to square one and shape the behavior starting at the very first step to refresh his memory.

boiled, baked or grilled. I prefer grilled chicken.

Remember to use safe seasonings for your dogs.

Plain boiled chicken is perfectly fine.
For baked and grilled chicken, my mom marinates it with her homemade apple sauces ... just to give some flavor and prevent from being dry.
